Illovo’s Ronald Ngwira takes helm as MCCCI Elects New Council

The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) ushered in new leadership at its elective Annual General Meeting held on the sidelines of the Business Leaders’ Summit at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge on Friday, 24th April 2026.

Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director Ronald Ngwira was elected President, succeeding Dr. Wisely Phiri of SPARC Systems, whose tenure was marked by strengthening the Chamber’s advocacy role and consolidating its influence in national policy dialogue.

Ngwira will be deputised by Dr. Dorothy Chapeyama, Chief Executive Officer of Reunion Insurance Company. Other councillors elected include Mackson Ng’ambi, John Keys and Duncan McDavid, representing the Northern Region, Steve Lwanda, Eng. Dr. Peter Matipwiri, Godwin Ng’oma, representing the Central Region and Steveria Kadangwe, Dr. Lillian Moyo, and Adil Chilungo representing the Southern Region.

In his acceptance speech, Ngwira pledged to “lead a Council that harnesses the principles of transparency and accountability, always mindful that the true strength of this Council lies in the unity and unwavering commitment of its members.”

Outgoing president Dr. Phiri urged the new council to “carry forward the momentum of dialogue with government and ensure that the Chamber remains the voice of business.”

Delegates described the election as a generational shift, with Ngwira’s leadership expected to bring fresh energy to MCCCI’s push for industrialisation and export-led growth.
