Renowned business executive Nyimpini Mabunda delivered the keynote address at the 2026 Lakeshore Business Leaders’ Summit, hosted by the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) challenging both government and private sector leaders to embrace purposeful leadership, transparency, and accountability as the bedrock of economic transformation.
Speaking against the backdrop of the Summit’s theme, “Leading with Purpose: Harnessing the Power of Transparency and Accountability,” Mabunda said Malawi’s future prosperity depends on leaders who are willing to move beyond rhetoric and commit to reforms that unlock investment and competitiveness.
“Purposeful leadership is not about titles; it is about responsibility to deliver measurable results,” Mabunda told delegates. “Investor confidence thrives where governance is predictable, institutions are strong, and accountability is non-negotiable.”

Drawing from his experience across African markets, Mabunda warned that Malawi risks lagging behind if it does not seize opportunities presented by regional integration under SADC, COMESA, and AfCFTA. He argued that the country must deliberately position itself as a competitive hub by strengthening governance frameworks and reducing inefficiencies.
“The economy of the future rewards nations that combine innovation with trust,” he observed, adding that Malawi’s private sector must be empowered to drive exports and industrialisation.
Mabunda emphasised that the private sector remains the engine of economic growth, but requires a level playing field to thrive. He urged government to reduce regulatory bottlenecks, streamline approvals, and incentivise value addition in agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.
“We must move from exporting raw commodities to exporting finished products that carry the Malawi brand,” he said, noting that industrialisation must be anchored in accountability and transparency.
Delegates described the keynote as both inspirational and pragmatic, saying it framed the Summit’s discussions on policy engagement and governance. Business leaders welcomed Mabunda’s insistence on accountability, noting that it resonated with their daily struggles against inconsistent regulations. Development partners highlighted his call for collaboration as timely, given Malawi’s urgent need for investment in energy, infrastructure, and industrialisation.
