Currently Malawi produces about 306,560 metric tones of pulses and exports them to South Africa and Europe. There are several varieties in commercial volumes, the main ones being beans, pigeon peas, white haricot beans, green and black grains and chick peas. Pulses can also be processed into dhals, which are presently being exported to Europe and the Far East.

Chilies are an emerging export crop in Malawi with production estimated at over 3,000 metric tones a year. The main varieties grown are bird’s eye chilies and long cayenne. Malawi is currently exporting to South Africa, United States of America and Zimbabwe among others.

  • Coffee
Malawi grows Arabica type of coffee with an average production of 4,176 metric tones per year. Major export markets are Germany, the USA, South Africa and Japan. There is scope for investment in instant coffee production-detailed project in the Annex.

  • Macadamia Nuts
Malawi produces an average of 5 metric tones of macadamia nuts per year. The market prospects look bright given the level of value added possible in the production of this commodity. Currently the nuts are exported to South Africa and Europe.

  • Paprika
The Paprika variety widely grown in Malawi is called Papri Queen. Malawi produced 6,350 metric tones in 2001. Most of Malawi paprika is exported to South Africa for further processing into powder and oleoresin, which is then re-exported to Europe and other markets. Apart from in South Africa, Malawi paprika is in high demand in Zimbabwe and Zambia and also to the main market in Europe, Spain in particular.

  • Soya Beans
Currently Malawi produces in excess of 28,000 metric tones of soya beans a year. Soya beans are exported to Japan and South Africa mostly in raw form. By products of soya beans are soya meal, soya milk, soya oil, mostly for the domestic market. A detailed project proposal on soya bean processing is attached in the Annex.

  • Tea
Malawi is the second largest producer of tea in Africa after Kenya. Malawi produced 41.6 million kilograms of tea in 2001. Malawi tea is mostly exported to the United Kingdom, the USA and South Africa. Colonial high yielding varieties are currently replacing the original varieties inherited from India.
